This year Hannah Keller chose to write and compete with an informative speech about dwarfism, the history behind it, challenges faced, and other things related to that topic. It is something that has affected her personally and she knew it would be something that was easy for her to talk about. However, Hannah said, “I walked in knowing this was going to be a tough meet.” Regardless, she still came out on top. When asked to describe what she felt knowing what she had achieved Hannah said, “I felt like I was up in the clouds. Knowing that I won the competition against students from larger schools than ours, felt like such a huge accomplishment.”
That it was. Mrs. Keber, our Speech Advisor and coach, described this particular meet as tough competition since it is open to schools of every class. Not only that, but she went on to say, “Varsity and Novice speakers do not compete directly against one another at Ord, but coaches are able to see how Novices would have fared with the Varsity based on the final scores. Hannah would have been ranked 7th overall in Varsity, based on her Novice scores.” Mrs. Keber also explained that part of Hannah Keller’s talent is her motivation and ability to set and achieve goals. She recognizes the value of constructive criticism and she is always willing to work towards progress. Hannah herself added, “Go to your speech meets feeling confident and having a positive mind.” With this in mind, we all expect Hannah to have good speech season ahead of her.
